When you're pregnant or have just become a mother, buying baby clothes can sometimes feel like an endless puzzle. Especially onesies: how many do you actually need? And how many per size?
Many parents either buy too few, or fill an entire closet with sizes that are barely worn in the end. That's why this guide helps you shop smartly and practically – without stress.
Why onesies are so important
Onesies are essentially the foundation of every baby outfit. They keep your baby warm, comfortable, and ensure clothes stay in place. In the first few months, your baby often goes through multiple onesies a day due to:
- spit-up moments;
- leaking diapers;
- milk;
- drooling;
- or simply an outfit change.
A soft, comfortable onesie is often the most used piece of clothing.
How many onesies does a newborn need?
For newborns, the general rule is:
Guideline for newborns (size 50/56)
- 6 to 10 onesies is ideal for most parents.
- Do you wash frequently? Then you can start with 4 pieces.
- Does your child suffer from reflux or do you prefer to wash less often? Then extra onesies are useful.
Especially in the first few weeks, onesies go through the laundry basket surprisingly quickly.
My own son suffered from reflux, so he spit up a lot and sometimes went through 3 onesies a day.
Tip: Make sure you always have a clean onesie in the diaper bag. This way, you can never forget to pack it and are always prepared for any accidents on the go. If you've used the clean onesie, put a new one in the bag as soon as you get home. This way, you don't have to think of everything every time you leave the house, but are already prepared.
How many onesies per size?
Below is a practical guideline:
| Size | Average number of onesies |
|---|---|
| 50/56 | 6 – 10 |
| 56/62 | 6 – 8 |
| 62/68 | 5 – 7 |
| 68/74+ | 4 – 6 |
As babies get older, you usually need slightly less because accidents often become less frequent.
Tip: We sell onesies with a lot of stretch, so you can use them for 2 sizes, which saves on purchases.
Don't buy too many small sizes
This is probably the most common mistake made by new parents.
Babies grow incredibly fast. Some newborns wear size 50 for only a few weeks - sometimes not at all. Therefore, it is wise to:
- not buy everything in one size,
- and already have a few items in larger sizes ready.
Stretchy fabrics like those in our products are ideal for this, as they fit well for longer and move comfortably with your baby.
Long sleeve or short sleeve?
Everyone has their own preference, but here are some guidelines:
Long sleeve onesies
Perfect for:
- autumn;
- winter;
- cooler days,
- for children with eczema (ointment or cream then stays on the arms well);
- or as a layer under clothing.
Short sleeve onesies
Ideal for:
- spring;
- summer;
- warm nights;
- or indoors.
Many parents find it useful to use both, for example, a short-sleeve onesie for playing in the playpen indoors and a long-sleeve onesie for outdoors.
Choose quality over quantity
Because onesies are worn and washed so often, you quickly notice a difference in quality. Soft fabrics stay beautiful longer, feel more pleasant on sensitive baby skin, and often provide more comfort throughout the day.
Therefore, pay attention to, for example:
- soft stretchy fabrics;
- breathable materials;
- OEKO-TEX certification;
- and comfortable seams and labels.
Our tip for young mothers
It's better to start with a smaller, well-thought-out collection of nice basics. As you get to know your rhythm, you'll naturally notice what you really use often.
Often, these turn out to be:
- a few favorite soft onesies;
- neutral colors that match everything;
- and comfortable basics that you'll want to put on again and again.
Finally
There's no "perfect" number of onesies — every baby and every parent is different. But with about 6 to 10 good onesies per size, you'll be comfortable in most situations.
And believe us: on busy days, an extra soft onesie can sometimes feel like a small lifesaver.
